THE WORLD’S BEST HORSE RACE

/ Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe

ALPINISTA ON TOP OF THE WORLD

The english trained five-year-old Alpinista was an excellent winner of the 101st running of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, the world’s best race, which took place on Sunday at ParisLongchamp. Owned and bred by Kirsten Rausing, who is originally from Sweeden but moved to Ireland at a young age, Alpinista was ridden by Luke Morris and is trained in Newmarket (Great Britain) by Sir Mark Prescott. The seventh four-year-old trainer was recording his first success in the race and has won over 1300 races in total.

With the track riding heavy due to a torrential downpour just before the off, the race was dictated early by the Japanese trained Titleholder. Alpinista was always to the fore and put up a courageous display to hold off the challenges of the Aga Khan owned Vadeni and last year’s winner, the Marcel Weiss trained German raider Torquator Tasso. The French Al Hakeem took fourth for Jean Claude Rouget, while Grand Glory, who is trained in Maisons-Laffitte by Gianluca Bietolini took fifth place.

Still in training at the age of 5, which is not too typical for a mare of such class, Alpinista has been in the form of her life and remains unbeaten this year. She has now won her last eight starts, six of which have come at Group 1 level.

Alpinista is the first five-year-old mare to win the  Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe since Corida in 1937.

KEY FIGURES FROM THE QATAR PRIX DE L'ARC DE TRIOMPHE

- Named the World’s Best Horse Race 5 times in the last 7 years!

In the official Longines World’s Best Horse Race international rankings, the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe has been named the world’s best horse race on five occasions (in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2021) since the rankings were introduced back in 2015!

The level of prowess demonstrated in this race is higher than in any other race, and only horses with outstanding sporting talent can compete in this legendary event.

- In 100 editions of the Arc, the winners have come from several different countries, as follows:
In horse racing, the nationality of the winner is decided by where the horse is trained, regardless of where it was born or its owner’s nationality.

- France: 68
- England: 15
- Ireland: 8
- Italy: 6
- Germany: 3

- 5 million euros:

This is the highest purse in France, which also means that the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe is one of the most richly-rewarded horse races in the world.

In 1920, the prize fund was 150,000 Francs. Since 2008, the purse has been 5 million euros, thanks to the event’s partnership with the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club.

- 2' 24" 49: the record time
German filly Danedream, who won the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 2011, still holds the record for the fastest time ever in this prestigious race. Her average speed, from a standing start, was 60km/h.

- 8 double victories:

Only 8 double victories have been achieved in 100 editions. Eight horses have won the Arc twice: Ksar (in 1921 and 1922), Motrico (in 1930 and 1932), Corrida (in 1936 and 1937), Tantième (in 1950 and 1951), Ribot (in 1955 and 1956), Alleged (in 1977 and 1978), Trêve (in 2013 and 2014) and Enable (in 2017 and 2018).

Several horses have attempted a triple win but as yet none have succeeded.

- ParisLongchamp:
- 35,000 spectators expected
- 50 nationalities represented
- 2,600 people working on ParisLongchamp racecourse for the Arc
- 200 different professions involved over the weekend
- 55.5 hectares of grounds in ParisLongchamp racecourse
- 55,000 square metres of grass in the spectator areas
- 160 metres: the length of the ParisLongchamp grandstand
- 1.5 miles: the “classic” horse race distance, used for the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe
- 17 hectares of turf on the different courses
- 10 cm: the length of the grass on the course
- 80 people maintain the different courses

- Horses
- 350 horses running in the 27 races scheduled over the weekend
- 17 tonnes of straw used for bedding in the racecourse stables
- 450 kg: the average weight of a racehorse
- 60 to 65 km/h: the average speed of a winning horse in the Arc
- 20 thoroughbreds: the maximum number of horses running in the Arc, all of which are English thoroughbreds, the world’s fastest horse breed.

- Lucky numbers on the inside!
On the morning of Thursday 29th September 2022, the draw will be made for the starters’ numbers for the 101st edition of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe and broadcast live on  the Equidia channel.

The lower numbers, which are positioned nearer the rail, meaning the horses have a shorter distance to run, are the most coveted by all participants. The luckiest number since 1980 has been number 2, followed closely by number 6. Torquator Tasso proved all predictions wrong by winning from stall number 12!

QATAR RACING AND EQUESTRIAN CLUB, PARTNER OF THE YEAR’S MAJOR EQUESTRIAN EVENT

The long-running partnership between France Galop and the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club has been renewed until 2027.

In January 2022, France Galop and the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) announced that they were extending the sponsorship of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend. The renewal of this major partnership for French racing covers a period of five years, from 2023 to 2027.

In the sporting world, this sponsorship agreement stands out for its longevity. It began in 2008, for an initial five-year period (2008-2012).

In 2010, it was extended for the first time until 2022. This new agreement extends the partnership until 2027.

This partnership cements the prestige of a weekend that features a record twelve Group 1 races (four of which are reserved for purebred Arabs) and a total prize fund of over 10 million euros. These two days of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend, plus the meeting on Friday at Saint-Cloud racecourse, are major events in the European racing season.

The Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC): Title sponsor of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend

The QREC was created in the early 1960s. Its mission is to represent, promote and develop the emirate’s equestrian initiatives on the international stage.

Focusing on equestrian sport and horse welfare, the QREC is dedicated to promoting Qatar as the nerve centre for world horse racing and a leader for purebred Arab breeding.

The QREC collaborates with local organisations that strive for excellence in terms of planning, regulating and developing the racing industry in Qatar, in order to promote its best practice worldwide.

The QREC is also the new title sponsor of the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club, one of the world’s major selective races.

The Qatar Arabian World Cup is the world’s most prestigious race for purebred Arabs and is one of the highlights of the action-packed Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe weekend.
The race is run over a distance of a mile and 2 furlongs and is reserved for purebred Arabs aged 4 and over.

One of the circuit’s key events, the Qatar Arabian World Cup has forged a reputation in line with that of the Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe, as it is contested by the world’s very best purebred Arabs hailing from the top stables.

Established in 2011, with His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Qassim Al-Abdullah Al-Thani Minister of Commerce and Industry, as the Chairman, Manateq is positioned as a vital component in achieving the 'Economic Development' pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030.

We realise that long-term and sustainable economic growth can only be accomplished through a thriving private business sector, capable of competing globally, and that the nation must now think beyond the current upcoming projects, such as the 2022 World Cup, to the establishment of non-oil related industries. To this end, the emphasis is now on the creation of a solid infrastructure in which small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) can prosper and grow.

To ensure this kind of longevity, it is essential that we have the investment, expertise, and entrepreneurial culture necessary. Manateq is therefore mandated to establish a wider range of business sectors in the economy, by developing indigenous enterprises in these sectors whilst also attracting international investment, businesses, and partners.

We work with potential and existing, local and foreign, investors; providing an international gateway for the swift set-up and successful growth of your business in Qatar.
